George of Pisidia

George of Pisidia
Poet who wrote three epic eulogies about the wars of Herakleios (q.v.); he was a deacon at Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (qq.v.). The first eulogy deals with Herakleios's campaign against the Persians (q.v.), the second with the attack of the Avars (q.v.) on Constantinople in 626, and the third with the emperor's (q.v.) final victory over Persian king Chosroes II (q.v.). In the 11th century, Psellos (q.v.) compared the style of George of Pisidia to that of Euripides (q.v.).
